How to Plant Sweetcorn
Planting sweetcorn is a great way to enjoy fresh, sweet corn on the cob during the summer months. Here are some steps to follow when planting sweetcorn:
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Sweetcorn prefers full sun, so choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The soil should be well-draining, as sweetcorn doesn't like to sit in water.
Prepare the soil. Use a hoe or rake to loosen the top few inches of soil, then mix in compost or other organic matter to improve the soil's fertility.
Plant the seeds. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows that are 30-36 inches apart. Plant at least 4 rows of sweetcorn to ensure good pollination.
Water regularly. Sweetcorn needs regular watering, especially during hot, dry weather. Water deeply once or twice a week, or as needed to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilize. Sweetcorn is a heavy feeder and requires regular fertilization. Use a balanced fertilizer that is high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Control pests and diseases. Sweetcorn is susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases, so be sure to keep an eye out for any problems and take appropriate measures to control them.
Harvest. Sweetcorn is ready to harvest when the silks at the top of the ear turn brown and the kernels are plump and juicy. Pick the ears as soon as possible after they are ripe, as the quality and flavor will decline quickly.
